AUTHOR: Anglan - 20-Jun-2008 10:52:29 Irish referendum exposes EU's undemocratic course

Not so much the result, but the fact that such a referendum was held only in Ireland is an indication of how undemocratic the EU has become. In effect, less than 1% of the EU's population has been given the opportunity to vote for or against the Lisbon Treaty, a treaty which would see significant powers of sovereign states shifted to Brussels. After the Dutch and French 'No' votes to the Euro Constitution in 2005, this time around Europe's leaders obviously realised that giving EU's population a say would result in further rejection and derail their confused and conflicting visions for a European super-state. We can be thankful to those who drafted the Irish Constitution of 1937 which stipulates that any change to the constitution which affects national sovereignty must be put to a referendum. There are certainly many positive results of the EU project; the European Court of Justice, mobility of the workforce, for example. However, the relentless pursuit of a politically united super-state with political clout on a par with the US is simply a pipedream that threatens to destroy what has been achieved. Opinion polls indicate that the introduction of the Euro was a bitter pill to swallow for the majority of Europeans. The politicians in Brussels would do better to consolidate what has been achieved, curtail superfluous spending, stop industrialists creating monopolies by influencing EU directives on norms and make the EU project more accountable to the peoples of Europe. Attempts to mould Europe into a homogenous single political entity will only fuel nationalism and will ultimately fail.
