Town awaits word on plan for big solar array

Waretown site could generate 3 to 5 megawatts By BOB VOSSELLER • MANAHAWKIN BUREAU • November 9, 2008 WARETOWN — Ocean Township officials are awaiting further word from the Atlantic County Utilities Authority on an initiative to install solar power arrays at a closed landfill in the township. The ACUA and township officials hope the property can accommodate enough solar arrays to generate three to five megawatts, more than any project in New Jersey and enough to power 900 to 1,500 homes. The Township Committee announced last month it was investigating the project through a partnership with the authority. "The time is right," Deputy Mayor Robert Kraft said of the Southern Ocean County Landfill project. Kraft supports installing solar arrays at the closed, capped 193-acre landfill on Route 532.
