Thames Water is proposing a massive new scheme called the Thames tunnel. It will be a sewage tunnel running directly under the Thames. Sir Joseph Bazalgette's network of sewers was great in its day, they say. But we have moved on. It is time for an upgrade. A makeover. They didn't have flushing lavatories in the 1860s, you know. When we have heavy rain the system overloads and sewage pours into the river Thames. The problem must be solved. This all sounds reasonable enough, although Thames Water customers may blanch at being expected to pick up the £2.5bn bill. But is the scheme really justified when the cost and disruption are fully considered? You can get a lot for £2.5bn when you go shopping for environmental breakthroughs.
