Stock markets surge as bargain hunters move in late in Tuesday's session

By Malcolm Morrison, THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - It's been another volatile day on North American stock markets, where indexes in Toronto and New York chalked up huge gains late in the afternoon despite miserable consumer confidence data. Toronto's S&P/TSX composite index surged 614.29 points or 7.2 per cent to 9,151.63, mending a good chunk of yesterday's mauling when the main index plunged 757 points or eight per cent because of growing worries about a global recession.
