Cuban lawmakers request world's support against U.S. sanctions

HAVANA, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Cuban lawmakers on Monday requested their counterparts across the world to demand the U.S. Congress and government lift the country's economic sanctions imposed on Cuba almost 50 years ago. In a statement on Monday, the parliament of Cuba said that in the last 16 consecutive years, the United Nations has approved resolutions against the U.S. sanctions, but Washington "with its usual arrogance, has disclaimed the express mandate of the international community". The parliament said that recently, hurricanes Gustav and Ike cost Cuba 5 billion U.S. dollars in damage, but the White House reiterated that it would lift the ban under no circumstances.
