Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA Liverpool have no plans to hold another auction for Xabi Alonso when the transfer window reopens in January despite the Spaniard's admission that he remains interested in joining Juventus. The 26-year-old midfielder was a transfer target for the Italian club and Arsenal in the summer as Rafael Benítez sought to sell his compatriot to fund the ultimately failed bid for Aston Villa's Gareth Barry. Though relations between Alonso and Benítez were strained by the proposed deal, and the Liverpool manager retains a desire to sign Barry, there is firm reluctance within Anfield to sell a player who has responded impressively to this summer's events and who has been integral to the side's fine start to the season.
