Musician Ruia Aperahama had a pleasant surprise waiting for him when he got off the plane at Auckland Airport after a 20-hour flight from Jamaica. A New Zealand Music Award for best Maori album. The New Lynn resident had no idea he’d won and was delighted when his wife Erina broke the news. "I just got off the plane and she was standing there with the award," he says. "I was thrilled." His album 12:24 Tekau Ma Rua: Rua Tekau Ma Wha was released in May. The tracks are all sung in Maori and combine reggae, traditional vocal chants, programmed beats and live instruments.
