John McCain went back to basics today by pitching himself as a scrappy underdog who "never gives up" in the face of polls showing Barack Obama storming to a double-digit lead in the final stretch of the campaign. At a rumbustious rally with 18,000 supporters at Virginia Beach, the Republican nominee claimed the media had written him off and that his rival "is measuring the drapes" for the White House, before adding: "We've got them just where we want them." But his speech, widely billed as the re-launch for a floundering campaign, did not mention any of up to 30 new proposals for the economy which he had spent much of the weekend discussing with advisers.
