Tories promise £15.7 billion high speed rail network

A £15.7 billion network of high speed rail lines that would cut journey times between cities by half would be built by a Tory Government. By David Millward, Transport Editor Theresa Villiers, the party's transport spokesman, said the new rail system would be introduced instead of building new runways at Stansted and Heathrow airports. And the party warned companies bidding for the work at the airport to "be very, very careful" before signing any contracts because if Labour gave the plans approval, a new Tory government would scrap them. The new train network would link Heathrow to St Pancras Station in London before running north to Birmingham, Manchester and then across to Leeds.
