It was going smoothly; I was getting the hang of it. “This is easy,” I thought. “I’m a natural.” But then something broke my concentration, a noise. I looked up towards the dock in front of me and heard it again. “Are you ready for me to let go?” It was the voice of Joanne Stolen, an instructor at the Frisco Bay Rowing Center, my instructor in what was my first-ever rowing lesson. She was holding onto a thin white rope, looping down the end of the dock and attached to the stem of my boat. I paused before answering.
