Theme: Migration and Development In June 2008 two communications were released by the European Commission outlining the directions that immigration and asylum policies were to take in the future. This article discusses these directions focusing on the balance between prosperity, solidarity, security and external responsibility in the areas of external border management, the commitment to solidarity with countries outside the EU and the increase in data sharing and use of biometrics. Perhaps one of the most difficult problems faced by the European Union today is that of effective immigration management.
