Just been reading through the Sunderland AFC Annual from 1990 (the one with Marco Gabbiadini on the front), and reading of players that we could have had brought to Sunderland in the past. These players have included Chris Waddle (when starting his career) and he was passed by the management of Ken Knighton and Frank Clark after a 2 week trial and you know the rest, next was Peter (Ugly) Beardsley he was chased but was passed up cause he was classed to small for a striker. Next was Bobby Charlton we had the oppotunitity to buy him and Stan Mortenson all that was needed was a 10 pound signing on fee, Charlton especially wanted to join Sunderland as his hero Len Shackleton played for us, the turning point in that was when the scout for Sunderland overlooked him and signed the goalkeeper Ronnie Routledge instead and Man Utd had...
