Crime › Police raid Asai over tainted rice sale

Friday 10th October, 09:18 AM JST NAGOYA — Police searched several locations related to Nagoya-based glue maker Asai, including the home of its president Toshinori Asai, on Friday to build a criminal case on suspicion of selling tainted rice to a wholesaler knowing it would be later resold as food. In a recent series of criminal investigations over the misuse of tainted rice to gain profits, it is the second case where police have launched a raid following the one against Osaka-based rice miller Mikasa Foods in September. Asai and Mikasa Foods have been under fire for diverting imported rice that had been designated as non-edible due to pesticide residue and fungal contamination to edible use.
