Odenke Abbey: better known as Marcel Desailly Odenke Abbey was four years old when his mother married a French diplomat in 1972, moved the family lock stock and barrel from Accra and settled in Nantes. The diplomat adopted little Odenke, encouraging him in his early football career with FC Nantes and then proudly sitting in the stands as he went on to to win the World Cup in 1998, despite being sent off, and then Euro 2008. Marcel Desailly did alright for himself, didn't he? No one batted an eyelid when this world class central defender, born in Ghana on September 7 1968, chose to play for France, captaining the country to the 2001 Confederations Cup and finally calling it a day after winning 116 caps.
