Room 217: Writing on reading

Article Date: Tuesday, October 7, 2008 I started something new in my English I class this year: independent reading. Every student has to have something outside the scope of the curriculum to read. I can't take a lot of time for independent reading but I can take some. My goal is to read for 15-20 minutes three times a week. I don't always make it but most weeks I do. And within some pretty broad but obvious limits, I don't really care what it is they bring to read. They can bring Stephen King or People magazine. They can bring novels or short stories. They can bring classic or contemporary poetry. They can bring fiction, nonfiction, comic books, essays, anthologies, anything except our class textbook.
