Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) decided its planned magnetically levitated (maglev) Shinkansen, capable of traveling 500 kph, will link Tokyo and Nagoya in a straight route through the Southern Japanese Alps, sources said. Nagano prefectural officials have called for a route that would turn north and pass through the central part of the prefecture. But JR Tokai decided to eliminate that detour to lower construction costs and reduce the travel time. The railway operator is expected to submit a report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as early as next week, saying the straight route is technically feasible.
