Two illegal immigrants were airlifted to Malta on Wednesday evening to receive urgent medical attention after being rescued from their boat by a Spanish fishing vessel. Earlier on Wednesday the Italian fishing vessel Marve spotted the boat with around 50 illegal immigrants on board taking in in water. The migrants were rescued by the Spanish-registered fishing-vessel Punta Aljibe, which later requested a medical evacuation of two people who were in need of urgent treatment. The AFM instructed the Spanish vessel to approach Malta, and a rescue helicopter was scrambled to the fishing vessel. The two migrants were airlifted to Malta by helicopter amid much difficulty hovering atop the Spanish fishing vessel's antennas and fishing equipment.
