Some College Presidents Support Lower Drinking Age

BALTIMORE (WJZ) ― Several university presidents in Maryland are pushing to have the legal drinking age lowered to 18. Jessica Kartalija reports it's an effort to curb binge drinking, but not everyone thinks it's a good idea. It's an idea being discussed in colleges here in Maryland and around the country. "What we're asking for is an honest and open discussion and debate as to whether the [drinking age of 21] has really solved the problem it is trying to solve or is there a better way to do this," said Mary Pat Seurkamp, College of Notre Dame president. She, along with 100 other university leaders, have signed the Amethyst Initiative, persuading lawmakers to reduce the legal drinking limit to 18.
