A spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann has said the couple will not "commit themselves emotionally" to potential sightings of their daughter Madeleine until they are officially confirmed. Clarence Mitchell said the McCanns would wait for their private detectives to confirm the reports. During the last week a number of sightings of the missing girl have come to light as part of the huge number of police files made public after the investigation into her disappearance was dropped. Madeleine went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, in Portugal, on May 3rd last year. Earlier in the week, there were reports in the media that police in Belgium are currently looking at CCTV footage of a girl in a bank which may potentially be Madeleine.
