When the 19-year-old Sergio Garcia went airborne in the fairway at Medinah Country Club in 1999, scissor-kicking as he leapt to follow the golf ball he had hit from between the roots at the base of a tree toward the green in the final round of the PGA Championship, he created expectations for his career that have yet to come down to earth. The sheer exuberance of that moment has often been used as a jumping off point for unflattering comparisons of behavior that has ranged from childish to churlish, from expectations to expectorations.
