Aug 9 2008 By Jim Smyth CAPTAIN fantastic Kevin Pietersen hammered a century at the Brit Oval yesterday - becoming only the third England Test player to do so in his first innings as skipper. He struck exactly 100 against the country of his birth, following in the footsteps of Archie MacLaren and Allan Lamb, as England were dismissed for 316 in the final npower Test. James Anderson then got one to swing back in to South Africa captain Graeme Smith to earn a leg before decision as the tourists closed on 37 for one, a deficit of 85 runs. Pietersen said: "I just went out and expressed myself knowing I needed to score some runs and we needed to get a lead.
