Hundreds of people are fleeing fighting in South Ossetia and seeking safety elsewhere in Georgia or neighboring Russia, the U.N. refugee agency said Friday. At least 1,000 people have crossed the border into North Ossetia — part of the Russian Federation — since Georgian troops launched a major military offensive to retake control of its breakaway province of South Ossetia, said Ron Redmond, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said. A further 500 have fled the opposite way and taken refuge in other parts of Georgia, Redmond said. He said the figures are estimates since humanitarian agencies cannot move about easily because of the ongoing fighting, which included Russian tanks being sent into Georgia.
