Cracking idea to go free range

School menus in Lancashire are being changed in a bid to improve the welfare of chickens. From next month, schools and care homes in the county will be receiving free range instead of battery eggs. The move should prove a boost to local producers as some – but not all – of the eggs will be sourced from Lancashire chickens. County Hall says the move is "more humane" and will affect more than half a million eggs cooked up each year. Coun Sean Serridge, the county council's Champion for Young People, said: "This is the right thing to do, and I know from speaking to children in the many schools I've visited, they see animal welfare as an important issue, and I'm sure will also welcome this decision.
