From staff reports • August 4, 2008 The Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of a Louisiana man who drowned Sunday evening in the Gulf of Mexico while trying to rescue another swimmer. Escambia Sheriff’s spokesman Glenn Austin said Sam Maggio of Metairie, La., was vacationing on Perdido Key with about a dozen family and friends. The 56-year-old Maggio was one of three people who swam into the Gulf to assist another man. The swimmer in distress has not been identified, Austin said. “In all the chaos that occurred, he left, and we have no idea who he is,” Austin said. “We looked for him that night, but couldn’t find him.” Authorities are not actively searching for the man, whose condition was not available.
