Target is to make OAPs safe

Jul 30 2008 by Simon Walton, Evening Gazette CRIMES against older people on Teesside have been targeted in a new push which could see harsher sentences on those who target the elderly. Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) bosses have pledged to take offences against the elderly seriously in a new policy. Chief Crown Prosecutor for Teesside Gerry Wareham said everyone had the right to live free from the fear of crime. “Our policy, Prosecuting Crimes Against Older People, makes clear to older people and their families that they can be confident that the CPS understands the serious implications of crimes against older people,” he said. Mr Wareham said any evidence of an aggravating element to an offence based on a victim’s age would be drawn to the attention of the court and could lead to an increase in sentence. Speaking at the...
