Bemba's property seized in Portugal at ICC requestI haven't been very good at posting about developments in DR Congo these days, but one major event was the International Criminal Court taking Jean Pierre Bemba into custody at the end of May. This was not quite as big news as seeking an arrest warrant for al-Bashir in Sudan, but a big step nonetheless. Just this week, the ICC has demanded the seizure of Bemba's assets in Portugal, where he had set up a home in exile for himself and his family, and to where he escaped last April (2007) during conflict in DR Congo caused by his militia.According to a communique from the Public Prosecutor's Office here, acting at the request of the ICC, the Portuguese legal establishment ordered the seizure of the villa (estimated at 2.5 million euros) of Jean-Pierre Bemba in France, as well as...
