Almost 25 years after Live Aid, celebrities united again yesterday to call for urgent help for hunger-stricken Ethiopia. Scenes straight from Michael Buerk's 1984 famine reports are once again visible in the drylands of East Africa. These pictures by Nick Danziger show how drought, conflict and poverty have put an estimated nine million people at risk. Oxfam says rising food prices have made the situation worse. Actors Colin Firth, John Hannah and Daniela Nardini, and author Iain Banks are launching Oxfam's Appeal for the region. It calls for emergency action in Ethiopia, Eritrea and northern Kenya.
