Scottish celebrities back charity drive for east Africa

Jul 25 2008 By Ros Wynne-Jones OXFAM'S celebrity supporters yesterday begged for help for up to 13million in danger of starving to death in east Africa. Author Iain Banks, singer Sandi Thom and actors John Hannah and Daniela Nardini were among the big names who made the plea for cash. The appeal came as acclaimed photographer Nick Danziger published harrowing prints of the humanitarian crisis in Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and northern Kenya. Drought, conflict, poverty and food prices rocketing by up to 500 per cent mean between nine and 13million people are in danger, Oxfam said. Banks - who wrote Complicity and The Crow Road - said: "In a time of economic hardship for all, the poor tend to suffer disproportionately.
