Canals 'More Popular Than Ever'

Britain's canals are having a major comeback - but this time it's all for fun. The UK's canal network is almost 250 years old The waterways that snake across the country once fuelled the industrial revolution, and now they are being used more than ever thanks to restoration programmes and a new-found love of barging holidays. According to a British Waterways report, there are now more boats on the UK's canal and river network than at the height of their freight-carrying heydays. And it comes on the back of £60m being spent on beautifying the canals and their towpaths. Chief executive of British Waterways Robin Evans said: "The waterways today are being used and enjoyed in ways that few people could not have imagined when they were built 250 years ago, or even when they were nationalised 60 years ago."
