Andy Roddick was angry with himself during a loss to 19-year-old Croatian Marin Cilic, but reserved some ire for the umpire. A fan yelled at Roddick with Roddick in mid-serve, and trailing 2-4 in the third set. He whacked a service winner anyway, but felt the sequence was unfair to Cilic and requested a re-serve from the umpire, and got it. On Roddick’s ensuing ace, the umpire overruled the line judge and called the ball out, causing Roddick to erupt. “You’re not supposed to touch that” the American said, describing the call as “bush league” and explaining that “it’s almost impossible to be 100% sure on balls that [barely] miss on the far side of the court when they’re traveling 130 miles an hour, then, to do it after, you know, someone had given something back, I thought was just unnecessary.” Not everyone was surprised to...
