Police hail Open planning success

The operation to deal with an influx of about 200,000 people to Merseyside for The Open golf championship has been hailed as a success by police. Officers spent 18 months planning with Sefton Council, tournament organisers and local residents for the event at Royal Birkdale, Southport. Merseyside Police, who made 19 arrests, thanked golf spectators for helping to make the event a "huge success". The economic impact on the local economy is now being calculated. Ch Supt John Young said the force was delighted with the smooth-running of the event.
