The end of the world... in a sandwich?

The end of the world is nigh. Or, to be more precise, the end of the world for sandwichboard men is nigh, if they happen to earn their meagre £4.50 an hour humping placards around London's West End. Westminster City Council will use new powers to remove what it calls the 'clutter' of advertisement boards from its shopping streets. Other local authorities, spotting the ban as a likely source of income, will doubtless follow suit. Councils and clutter do not get on. That is, unless the clutter is of their own making. I once counted the traffic signs created by the anti-clutter Westminster Council along one stretch of Oxford Street, and there were literally hundreds of them.
