Rudd warms to nuclear India

AUSTRALIA would adopt a "constructive" attitude towards India's moves to acquire nuclear materials, the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, said after discussing the issue with his Indian counterpart, Manmohan Singh, at the G8 summit in Japan. But Mr Rudd stopped short of giving the Indian Prime Minister an undertaking that Australia would support the US-Indian nuclear agreement in the Nuclear Suppliers Group of uranium-producing countries. Mr Rudd said he had a "very long and good" conversation with Mr Singh, who had raised India's aspirations to expand its nuclear power industry. "This matter is still being progressed in terms of India's negotiations with the International Atomic Energy Agency for a safeguards agreement and then that matter proceeds through the normal process of the Nuclear Suppliers Group," Mr Rudd said.
