A Jan. 20 trial date was set Tuesday for a Bonita man accused of strangling a woman and their 10-month-old son after she threatened to take him to court over the paternity of the child. Dennis Potts, 24, could face the death penalty if convicted of the July 26, 2006, murders of 22-year-old Tori Vienneau and her baby, Dean Springstube. Vienneau was found dead with the cord of a hair-straightening iron wrapped around her neck and the child was found hanging in his crib with the cord from a cell phone charger wrapped around his neck. Potts' longtime friend, 24-year-old Maxwell Corn, is charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice for allegedly helping Potts fake two paternity tests and lying to police about it.
