Department of Transportation workers inspect a damaged expansion joint on Interstate 5, Tuesday, July 08, 2008. TUKWILA, Wash. -- Traffic trying to get into Seattle from the Tukwila area was a big mess Tuesday afternoon due to emergency road work. DOT officials say three right lanes of I-5 North were closed for about an hour just north of the Martin Luther King Jr. /SR-599 exit because an expansion joint came loose in the middle lane. Video from Air4 showed part of the metal joint sticking up above the pavement. DOT workers used crowbars and welding equipment to remove the joint and make quick repairs. All lanes reopened about 1:45 p.m. and traffic was flowing smoothly again, but the work was not yet done. Crews planned to continue work at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
