A trip to the shops on his own is no longer out of bounds, and he can choose with whom he wants to hang out at break in the school playground without a carer by his side. Mazanur, born with a chromosome defect that means he is unable to walk, has poor sight and has limited communication, owes his first taste of freedom to a new £3,500 power-steered wheelchair he acquired through a unique service set up between the charity Whizz-Kidz and the primary care trust (PCT) where he lives in Tower Hamlets, east London.
