Daily Star Political News: Assad voices Syrian backing for Lebanon's independence

'We fully support' Sleiman's presidency, political views Daily Star staff Wednesday, July 09, 2008 BEIRUT: Syria has always acknowledged Lebanon's independence, Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview published Tuesday in the French daily Le Figaro. When asked whether Syria would agree to exchange of embassies with Lebanon, Assad said that he had suggested this to the Lebanese government back in 2005. He said the lack of a Syrian embassy in Lebanon does not mean that the Syrian government denies Lebanon's independence and sovereignty. Assad added that the presence of an embassy implies good relations with the host country and, for the past three years, Syrian-Lebanese relations have not been at their best.
