G8 agrees on 'vision' to halve emissions by 2050

Mark Davis in Hokkaido, Phillip Coorey and Peter Hartcher THE world's eight major industrialised nations have agreed to adopt a "vision" to halve their greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, providing some hope that a global agreement on greenhouse gas reduction can be achieved. The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, armed with his own plans for a domestic emissions trading scheme, will add to the pressure today when he addresses the Group of Eight summit in Japan, at which he is an invited participant. Mr Rudd will use the landmark occasion - Australia's first appearance at the powerful summit - to urge all nations, including the big developing economies of China and India, to take urgent action to curb climate change.
