Insurgents Attack Seat of Somali Interim Government

Authorities in Somalia say Islamic insurgents have fired mortars at the town of Baidoa, killing at least two government soldiers and wounding seven others. The Shebab movement Tuesday claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted the presidential palace and airport late Monday. Baidoa is also the home of Somalia's transitional parliament. Ethiopian troops entered Somalia two years ago to help the interim government fight an Islamist movement that was threatening to take over the country. Fighting since then has killed thousands of Somalis and displaced more than a million others. Somalia has been continuously torn by conflict since the fall of the last stable government in 1991.
