EU parliament calls for brakes on German-Russian gas project

The European Parliament has voted to support closer scrutiny of a controversial gas pipeline between Russia and Germany. In a non-binding motion, the parliament called on the EU executive to launch a new investigation into the environmental impact of the planned Baltic pipeline. The assembly said the pipeline's operator, Nord Stream, should consult with countries around the Baltic before proceeding with the project. Many Baltic nations, including most notably Poland, are angered by the pipeline, which they say shuts them out of future plans to deliver Russia gas to Western Europe.
