Youth Day strike may be off

RAIL workers will decide this afternoon whether to go ahead with a strike during next week's World Youth Day. New South Wales Transport Minister John Watkins met union officials for three hours today in an effort to resolve the wage dispute driving the strike threat. Unions NSW secretary John Robertson emerged from the meeting in Sydney saying some positive progress had been made. The Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) would consult its delegates and make a decision by 5pm (AEST) today on whether to push ahead with the strike, he said. The RTBU is planning a 24-hour strike on July 17, the day Pope Benedict XVI will tour Sydney's CBD.
