Unions hail 'constructive' Pope strike talks

(AAP: Sergio Dionisio, file photo) Unions say they have held constructive high-level talks with the New South Wales Government that could see the 24-hour rail strike planned for the height of the Pope's visit to Sydney next week cancelled. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union is consulting its members about today's discussions with Transport Minister John Watkins and will make an announcement at 5:00pm (AEST) about whether it will hold the strike. Unions NSW boss John Robertson says the proposal developed during the talks provides a way forward for the two parties. Rail workers are planning to strike next Thursday over the Government's 2.5 per cent capped pay rise offer, on Pope Benedict's busiest day during the World Youth Day event.
