High number of badgers gives rise to growing TB fears

Published Date: 07 July 2008 SOMETIME later today Hilary Benn, the Secretary of State for the environment, will rise in the House of Commons and announce that there will be no widespread cull of badgers in England as part of the drive to control bovine tuberculosis. That decision will obviously please a great many people, but it will infuriate many farmers who are likely to see around 40,000 cattle culled before the end of this year. It is clear to me that there is a link between TB and badgers, but it appears that Benn is not prepared to take an unpopular route. Fortunately, TB is not a problem in Scotland – yet. However, if the disease continues to spread northwards in England, as it is already doing, there could be a real risk to Scottish herds.
