He also led the home riders to team victory over Sweden and Britain, which was hardly surprising since the Germans were fielding their top Olympic candidates. The German selectors were left with a dilemma when Bettina Hoy's 17-year-old dressage leader, Ringwood Cockatoo, was found to be lame after a disastrous show-jumping round so did not start across country. A decision regarding Cockatoo was due to be made at a selectors' meeting yesterday evening.
