The long and short of spread betting

Published Date: 06 July 2008 TODAY I begin a foray into the weird and wonderful world of spread betting. Over the next three weeks, I will be attempting to make a profit for Yorkhill Children's Foundation by betting on the outcome of various financial performances – and I'll be providing readers with an update on progress each Sunday until July 27. CMC Markets, a global online trader which launched its first office in Scotland last year, has placed £2,000 in my account. It will pay out whatever return is generated to the charity, which supports the care given to sick children at Yorkhill Ho spital in Glasgow. Why spread betting? Housebuilders are in freefall, banks are involved in multi-million-pound writedowns, property prices are flat or declining and the FTSE is see-sawing on a daily, if not hourly, basis. Such...
