Valverde had just won the first stage of the 2008 Tour de France, from Brest to Plumelec, and in doing so set up a memorable Spanish weekend before Rafael Nadal's dual with Roger Federer at Wimbledon this afternoon. More importantly, the Murcian rider had just issued a resounding statement of intent to his rivals for overall victory in Paris on July 27.
