Fourteen pro-democracy protesters have gone on trial in Myanmar

By: THE ASSOCIATED PRESS YANGON, Myanmar - Fourteen pro-democracy protesters have gone on trial in Myanmar for demanding the release of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi on her 63rd birthday. The group, 13 members of Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party and a Buddhist monk, were beaten by pro-government forces June 19 and detained in front of the party headquarters. Suu Kyi, who is still under house arrest, has spent more than a dozen of the last 19 years under detention. Her party swept national elections in 1990, but the ruling military junta refused to honour the results. A government official, who refused to be identified because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media, couldn't say what charges the defendants face.
