On July 4 rivals seek patriot gain

UNITED STATES President George Bush and White House hopefuls senators Barack Obama and John McCain marked the US Independence Day holiday with parades, picnics and odes to patriotism. Mr Bush spoke at a naturalisation ceremony at the home of the third US president, Thomas Jefferson, in Monticello, Virginia. At the start of his speech, Mr Bush was interrupted by hecklers who screamed: "Impeach Bush!" The President paused and chuckled, saying: "To my fellow citizens-to-be, we believe in free speech in the United States of America." The widely distributed Parade weekly magazine featured essays on patriotism by senators McCain and Obama.
