Sheron Patterson, pastor of Dallas' Highland Hills United Methodist Church, believes so strongly in premarital education that she won't perform a couple's wedding until they've gotten advice from her or someone she trusts. But when asked earlier this week, she said she was unaware of a new $16 million state program aimed at preventing divorce through free, eight-hour marriage education classes. Beginning Sept. 1, couples who go through such a course will get a steep discount on their marriage license fee. "I hadn't heard about that," said Dr. Patterson.
