Huge fireworks in Big Apple, D.C.

Associated Press - July 4, 2008 10:23 PM ET NEW YORK (AP) - Like communities across the country, New York City and Washington, D.C., have capped their July Fourth celebrations with spectacular fireworks. In New York, organizers said this year's display would be the best ever, and few would likely disagree. A non-stop barrage of fireworks lit up the sky over the East River, and new nautical ones floated on the water, choreographed to music. Hundreds of thousands of people cheered and applauded. In Washington, rain doused revelers on the National Mall before the celebrations. But the fireworks appeared to come off without a hitch. Across America, the country's 232nd birthday was celebrated with parades, observances, and naturalization ceremonies.
